On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at approximately 8:40 p.m., deputies were dispatched to the Skyhaven Conoco and Motel, located at 311 NW 50 Highway, Warrensburg, Johnson County, Missouri, in reference to an in-progress robbery. The reporting party advised a male inside the gas station was armed with a handgun with a silver barrel, demanding the store clerks give him his money back or he would shoot them. RP advised the male was an older, white male, wearing jeans, who left traveling westbound on NW 50 Highway. Upon speaking with the store owner, he advised the male checked into the hotel and provided his ID when he checked in. Store Owner identified the male as James Howell, Jr. Store Owner advised about an hour after getting the room, James came into the store, demanding his money back. Store Owner advised he gave James his $25 deposit, but James was mad and wanted all of his money. Store Owner advised James threatened to shoot him, left the store and reentered the store with a firearm. Store owner then gave James the rest of his money back. A warrant was obtained, and James was later taken into custody.
